THE IMPERIALLEXICON
Warhammer 40k terms of the Adeptus Astartes, explained in plain language — each with what it means for a sanctioned deployment.
EXTERMINATUS
Exterminatus is the deliberate, total destruction of an entire planet by the Imperium of Man in Warhammer 40k, sanctioned only when a world is judged beyond salvation and too dangerous to be left intact. It is a final verdict rather than a tactic — reserved for worlds lost to Chaos, a Tyranid Hive Fleet, or unbreakable rebellion.
Read entryTHE DEATHWATCH
The Deathwatch are the Imperium's elite xenos-hunting Space Marines — the Chamber Militant of the Inquisition's Ordo Xenos, formed from veteran Battle-Brothers seconded from many different Chapters to wage a specialised war against the alien. They fight in small kill-teams, wear jet-black power armour with a bare silver left arm, and answer to a Watch Captain rather than a home Chapter.
Read entryDROP POD
A Drop Pod in Warhammer 40,000 is a single-use, armoured orbital assault craft that fires a squad of Space Marines from a warship in low orbit and slams them onto the battlefield in under a minute. Launched from a Strike Cruiser or Battle Barge, it turns the void above a contested world into a delivery mechanism for a sudden, decapitating strike.
Read entryGENE-SEED
Gene-seed is the engineered genetic material — ultimately derived from the Emperor's twenty Primarchs — that grows a suite of specialised organs inside a human recruit, transforming him into a transhuman Space Marine. Each Chapter's gene-seed is a finite, sacred inheritance, tithed to and screened by the Adeptus Terra to guard it against mutation and corruption.
Read entryZONE MORTALIS
Zone Mortalis — High Gothic for "fatal ground" — is the Adeptus Astartes term for close-quarters warfare fought in cramped, sealed spaces such as starship decks, boarding actions, space hulks, tunnels and hive interiors, where firefights collapse to point-blank range and specialist wargear, not manoeuvre, decides who walks out.
Read entryTHUNDERHAWK GUNSHIP
A Thunderhawk Gunship is the primary heavy dropship and close-air-support craft of the Adeptus Astartes (Space Marines) in Warhammer 40,000, capable of both atmospheric and void flight. It ferries up to thirty Battle-Brothers from an orbiting warship down to a contested surface, fights alongside them with its dorsal turbo-laser destructor, then lifts the survivors back out.
Read entrySPACE MARINE CHAPTER
A Space Marine Chapter is the standard fighting formation of the Adeptus Astartes in Warhammer 40,000 — a fully self-contained brotherhood of roughly one thousand Space Marines under a Chapter Master, organised into ten companies and supported by its own warfleet, fortress-monastery, armoury and gene-seed stock. Chapters were created after the Horus Heresy, when the Codex Astartes broke the vast Space Marine Legions apart so that no one man could ever again wield a Legion's strength.
Read entryPRIMARIS SPACE MARINES
Primaris Space Marines are an improved generation of Adeptus Astartes, engineered across ten thousand years by Archmagos Belisarius Cawl from gene-stock of the original Primarchs and unveiled by Roboute Guilliman at the launch of the Indomitus Crusade. They stand a head taller than the older 'Firstborn' Marines, carry three additional gene-seed organs — the Sinew Coils, the Magnificat and the Belisarian Furnace — and fight in new Mk X power armour with the bolt rifle as their standard arm.
Read entryCHAPLAIN
A Chaplain is the spiritual warden of a Space Marine Chapter in Warhammer 40,000 — a skull-masked warrior-priest of the Reclusiam who keeps the Chapter's cult, administers its oaths and death-rites, and fights in the front line with the crozius arcanum, a blessed power maul. Clad in black armour, a Chaplain sustains his brothers' zeal in battle and watches them for the first taint of doubt, despair or heresy.
Read entryCHAOS SPACE MARINES
Chaos Space Marines — the Heretic Astartes — are Space Marines who betrayed the Emperor and swore themselves to the Dark Gods of Chaos. Their core are the nine Traitor Legions that followed Warmaster Horus into rebellion ten thousand years ago, joined ever since by renegade Chapters and fallen brothers. Warp-touched, often mutated, and armed with millennia of hatred, they wage the Long War against the Imperium from strongholds like the Eye of Terror.
Read entryTHE HORUS HERESY
The Horus Heresy was the galaxy-spanning civil war fought roughly ten thousand years before the 41st Millennium, in which Warmaster Horus — the Emperor's most trusted son — was corrupted by the Chaos Gods and led fully half of the Space Marine Legions in rebellion. It ended at the Siege of Terra with Horus slain and the Emperor mortally wounded, interred ever after upon the Golden Throne. Everything about the modern Imperium is a scar left by this war.
Read entryPOWER ARMOUR
Power armour is the powered ceramite warplate of the Adeptus Astartes in Warhammer 40,000 — a full-body suit whose electrically-motivated fibre bundles amplify the wearer's already transhuman strength, sealed against void and poison, and wired directly into a Space Marine's nervous system through the Black Carapace implant. Worn over a body engineered for it, power armour makes a single warrior the equal of an armoured vehicle.
