The Chapter is the Imperium's answer to its own worst wound. During the Great Crusade the Emperor's twenty Legions numbered in the tens and hundreds of thousands — and when half of them followed Horus into rebellion, that concentration of power nearly murdered mankind. In the ashes of the Heresy, Roboute Guilliman's Codex Astartes decreed the Second Founding: each loyal Legion was shattered into Chapters of a thousand battle-brothers, each sovereign, each self-sustaining, none strong enough to threaten Terra alone. A Chapter answers to no planetary governor and pays no conventional tithe; it holds its own fortress-monastery, raises its own recruits from worlds it guards, maintains its own fleet of Battle Barges and Strike Cruisers, and cultures the gene-seed that is its true wealth. For anyone costing an Astartes deployment, the Chapter is the whole shop: every Battle-Brother, Thunderhawk and Drop Pod on this ledger is drawn from one of these thousand-strong brotherhoods — and a Chapter commits its full strength to a single war perhaps once in a century.
Ten companies, from Veterans to Scouts
The Codex Astartes prescribes the shape almost every Chapter keeps. The 1st Company holds the Veterans — the Chapter's deadliest warriors and its precious Terminator plate. Companies 2 through 5 are the Battle Companies, each around a hundred brothers in a mix of Tactical, Assault and Devastator squads; these fight the Chapter's wars and provide most deployments a client will ever see. The 6th and 7th are Tactical reserves, the 8th an Assault reserve, the 9th a Devastator reserve — depth for grinding campaigns and a pool for replacements. The 10th Company holds the Scouts: aspirants mid-transformation, learning war under Sergeants before they earn full power armour. Above them stand the Chapter Master and his captains, flanked by the specialist orders — Chaplains of the Reclusiam, Librarians, Apothecaries, Techmarines — and beneath it all labours an unsung host of Chapter serfs who crew the ships and keep the fortress running.
A thousand brotherhoods, a thousand cultures
There are roughly a thousand Chapters at any moment in the 41st Millennium, seeded across the galaxy by successive Foundings so that no sector is ever far from the Angels of Death. Most descend from Guilliman's own Ultramarines, whose stable gene-seed made them the template for new Foundings. But compliance is a spectrum, not a law of physics. The Space Wolves keep thirteen Great Companies and acknowledge no Codex; the Black Templars wage a permanent crusade with strength scattered across dozens of fleets; the Dark Angels hide an inner circle and a secret war within their own ranks. Each Chapter grows its own culture from its recruiting worlds — feral headhunters, hive-gangers, knightly houses — and that culture shapes how it fights, which is why the same tithe can buy the patient siegecraft of Imperial Fists or the berserk fury of Flesh Tearers.
Why a full Chapter deployment is an event in history
A Chapter almost never fights as one body. The Codex itself discourages it — its whole purpose was to prevent such concentrations — and practicality agrees: a thousand brothers cannot garrison a thousand worlds if they stand on one. Chapters wage war by detachment: a squad here, a strike force there, a Battle Company for a campaign. When a Chapter Master commits everything — as the Blood Angels did defending Baal against Hive Fleet Leviathan, or the Ultramarines against the Word Bearers' invasion of Ulramar — it means the stakes are existential. That is what the Chapter Deployment line on this ledger really prices: not a thousand soldiers but the entire war-making capacity of a sovereign transhuman state — its fleet, its armoury, its Dreadnoughts, and a genetic inheritance ten thousand years old — wagered on a single warzone.
